Summary
Find the human body fascinating? Then biomedical science is for you. You will learn about the cause, nature, progression, and consequences of diseases, understand how they are diagnosed, and explore research aimed at their prevention and treatment. You'll also gain laboratory experience in areas such as chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, applied pharmacology, genetics, microbiology and immunology. As well as offering a physiological pharmacology major on all campuses, students can choose between physiology and pharmacology minors; and in Sydney and Melbourne, nutrition and chemistry minors.
Professional experience
You will be required to complete 185 hours, including 80 hours of community engagement and 105 hours of industry immersion.
Work placement
Students will complete one specified unit of workplace learning, with the option of a second elective unit, with an external organisation of their choice. The unit will require students to address an issue or problem of a biomedical or related nature over the course of their immersion experience. The problem will be defined in consultation with the Course Coordinator and the industry contact, and the student will undertake exploratory work to find a solution or answer to address the issue.
Students will complete one unit of community engagement, providing an opportunity to engage with the community in order to enhance the dignity and wellbeing of people and communities. Students will volunteer at a selected public sector or non-profit organisation supporting disadvantaged individuals and families experiencing socially-determined health issues.
As part of your course, you will be placed in a range of organisations to integrate the theory you learn with practical workplace experiences (placements). Visit ACU’s Work Integrated Learning (WIL) website to learn more about pre-placement requirements.
