Course Details

Understand the function and influence of communication and develop comprehensive knowledge of data science tools and insights gained from data. Data is playing an increasingly large role in the way we communicate in an increasingly digital world. Data is also helping media companies and publishers overcome some of their biggest challenges and open new opportunities by delivering personalised and relevant content. The increased personalisation of media consumption requires expert skills in both communication and data strategies. From social media to online newspapers and blogs, publishers are also collecting data and using algorisms to improve user experience. Effective understanding of data also provides valuable opportunities for publishers and distributers to better monetise digital content. With the increased role that data plays in monetising content, there is a growing opportunity for skilled graduates that are agile problem-solvers, capable of tackling real-world problems by applying the insights gained from extracting knowledge from data in a communication context. These professionals need to be able to understand the way communication strategies work and the behavioural trends that influence audience engagement. Data science is an ever-changing landscape and at the completion of this course you’ll be able to move with it having developed a set of fundamental tools and techniques to lead in transforming industry. This course provides real-world learning from your first semester, with a job-ready balance of communication skills and creative thinking. In the Communication degree you will experience authentic real-world opportunities with industry-led briefs and engagement through capstone units across the Communication majors. Your study will benefit from connection to industry experts through experienced teaching and tutoring staff and guest lecturers. You will apply theoretical frameworks to real-world problems so you can make clear connections between what is learned in the classroom and your future practice as a data science professional. You will be encouraged to become an independent learner through discussion, debate and interaction with peers and teaching staff, independent studies and self-reflection. Your studies will culminate with the Data Science Capstone Project, where you’ll work on an extensive project with an industry partner to synthesise your learned skills and techniques to solve more complex authentic problems, which will build your preparedness to enter the workforce.

Qualification: Bachelor Degree (Pass)

Course structure: In order to complete this course, you must complete a total of 384 credit points, made up of 192 credit points from the Bachelor of Communication and 192 credit points from the Bachelor of Data Science. You will undertake the two components of the double degree concurrently.
