Postal Sorting Officers receive, sort and despatch mail in post offices or postal sorting centres.

What the job involves

  • Receives and checks incoming mail and mail bags

  • Assists with the verification of registered and special articles

  • Operates mail processing equipment such as letter preparation lines, letter indexing and sorting machines, multi-line optical character machines and bar-coding equipment

  • Performs manual sorting duties and prepares documentation for dispatching mail

  • Processes underpaid mail, bulk mail lodgements, express mail and other mail services

  • Investigates complaints regarding lost items
